This case study demonstrates the application of Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to evaluate website performance, user behaviour, traffic acquisition, engagement, retention, and customer lifetime value. The objective was to identify meaningful trends within the Google Merchandise Store and provide actionable recommendations to improve digital marketing performance.
Analyse website traffic sources and acquisition channels
Evaluate user engagement and bounce rate performance
Assess customer retention and returning user behaviour
Identify high-performing acquisition channels using Lifetime Value (LTV)
Develop recommendations to improve future marketing performance
While the Google Merchandise Store generated significant website traffic over the reporting period, raw analytics data alone provided little insight into marketing effectiveness.
The challenge was to distinguish genuine marketing performance from anomalies such as spam traffic while identifying which channels delivered the highest quality visitors and long-term customer value.
Using GA4 Explorations and standard reporting tools, the following performance areas were analysed:
Traffic sources were reviewed across a nine-month reporting period to determine which channels contributed the highest volume and quality of visitors.
Key observations included:
Significant spikes in non-direct traffic that appeared inconsistent with normal user behaviour
Evidence of spam traffic before Google's anti-spam algorithm updates
Consistent performance from Email marketing campaigns
Organic Search emerging as one of the strongest and most reliable acquisition channels
Very limited activity from Paid Search (CPC) and Referral sources
Bounce rate and engagement metrics were analysed to understand how effectively visitors interacted with the website.
Despite large volumes of irregular traffic, overall engagement remained strong.
Key findings included:
Overall bounce rate of 54.85%
Organic Google Search generated the highest-quality traffic
Google organic visitors produced over 2.3 million events
Organic users recorded a bounce rate of just 35.49%, indicating strong content relevance and user experience
These findings suggest that visitors arriving through search intent were significantly more engaged than users from other acquisition channels.
User engagement was monitored throughout the reporting period using:
Average engagement time
Engaged sessions per active user
Overall interaction trends
Performance fluctuated throughout the year but remained consistently healthy overall.
Highlights included:
Peak engagement reached 1 minute 57 seconds
Lowest engagement occurred during early May
Strong recovery through August and September
Consistent engagement across multiple acquisition sources
These trends indicate positive user sentiment and a website experience capable of maintaining visitor interest over time.
Returning users and cohort analysis were used to evaluate customer loyalty.
Results showed:
Approximately 615,000 new users
Approximately 83,000 returning users
Returning user rate of 13.5%
Although retention was considered acceptable, the analysis identified opportunities to strengthen customer loyalty through improved lifecycle marketing and ongoing content strategies.
GA4 Explorations were used to compare customer lifetime value across marketing channels.
One of the strongest insights identified was the performance of Email marketing.
The highest-performing campaign generated:
$132.56 Lifetime Value
25 minutes 46 seconds average engagement
Although email campaigns produced mixed overall results, they consistently demonstrated the greatest potential for generating long-term customer value.
Based on the analysis, several strategic opportunities were identified:
Improve technical SEO to increase high-quality organic traffic
Continue investing in content that supports Google Search visibility
Review email marketing automation to improve campaign consistency
Introduce A/B testing for email subject lines, CTAs and creative assets
Continue monitoring spam traffic following Google's anti-spam updates
Strengthen customer retention through lifecycle and remarketing campaigns
